Last year, 18,890 suffered these violations, some by more than one type. "Grave violations" include the recruitment and use of children by armed groups, killings, maiming and injuries, sexual violence, abductions and attacks on schools and hospitals. It noted that between January - December 2022 there were 27,180 grave violations committed against children caught up in war in the 26 conflict situations assessed, making this the highest number ever verified by the UN.

This year's debate comes at a time when the world is grappling with escalating conflict in many regions of the world and witnessing the highest number of recorded grave violations against children. The United Nations Security Council held its annual open debate on children and armed conflict on 5 July 2023.
